The Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department provides career firefighters to supplement
volunteer staffing.
During regular business hours, 7 am to 3 pm - Monday through Friday, career personnel
are the primary responders. A career captain, Jack Dickens, is the station commander and
is assigned to daywork. Acting Fire Technician Corey Smedley and at least one other
Firefighter or Emergency Response Technician (Firefighter/Paramedic).
Career staff handle fire inspections at apartment buildings and day care centers, and pre-plan
new and existing buildings in the first due, in addition to responding to emergency calls.
Additionally, one county firefighter rotates 1-day-on/3-days-off for 24-hour shift work.

In 1997, Hyattsville's longest-standing career firefighter, Charlie Hardesty, retired
after 27 years, most of it spent right here at the HVFD. Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department is led
by Fire Chief Ron Siarnicki. The career Northern Division Commander is Kevin Andrecs.
The Fourth Battalion Chief, responsible for the daily operation
of Stations 1, 3, 4, 34, 44 and 12 is Pat Breen.
At night, the operations of the county's fire department are
primarily managed by Car 66, who runs out of Company 22 (Tuxedo-Cheverly). He holds the rank of
Battalion Chief and handles most typical issues that arise throughout his shift. An EMS Supervisor, typically a Paramedic Captain designated as EMS1,
handles the day-to-day emergency medical service delivery.
