The Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department provides career firefighters to supplement volunteer staffing.

During regular business hours, 7 am to 3 pm - Monday through Friday, career personnel are the primary responders. A career captain, Jack Dickens, is the station commander and is assigned to daywork. Acting Fire Technician Corey Smedley and at least one other Firefighter or Emergency Response Technician (Firefighter/Paramedic).

Career staff handle fire inspections at apartment buildings and day care centers, and pre-plan new and existing buildings in the first due, in addition to responding to emergency calls.

Additionally, one county firefighter rotates 1-day-on/3-days-off for 24-hour shift work.

Current shift personnel:

  • A-Shift
    Firefighter Chris Harris
  • B-Shift
    Firefighter Dan Schrader
  • C-Shift
    Firefighter John Inman
  • D-Shift
    Firefighter Darryn Symes-Flowers

In 1997, Hyattsville's longest-standing career firefighter, Charlie Hardesty, retired after 27 years, most of it spent right here at the HVFD. Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department is led by Fire Chief Ron Siarnicki. The career Northern Division Commander is Kevin Andrecs. The Fourth Battalion Chief, responsible for the daily operation of Stations 1, 3, 4, 34, 44 and 12 is Pat Breen.

At night, the operations of the county's fire department are primarily managed by Car 66, who runs out of Company 22 (Tuxedo-Cheverly). He holds the rank of Battalion Chief and handles most typical issues that arise throughout his shift. An EMS Supervisor, typically a Paramedic Captain designated as EMS1, handles the day-to-day emergency medical service delivery.
