A water main break on Homewood Avenue in Baltimore City just after midnight on May 10 left a river running through 8 city blocks until morning. It took work crews more then three hours to control the break. More than a dozen row homes were so badly damaged by the flood, which covered dozens of cars and filled basements, that they had to be condemned and torn down the day after the flood. It was expected to take several days for life to return to normal in the neighborhood, which includes a major east-west route through the city. About 15 residents had to be rescued from their homes in the early morning hours by divers from Baltimore City Fire Department Rescue 1.
