44 Box Brings Squad 1

At 1924 hours, the box was struck for 6708 25th Ave in 44’s area for the house fire. Squad 1 cleared a wreck on East/West at Rt. 1 and was placed on the initial assignment as the third due special service. E441 arrived on scene to find a working basement fire.

Squad arrived and took up RIT duties. Due to the heavy smoke, the squad crew was requested by command to open up and ventilate the structure. While crews where in the process of taking windows and forcing doors, they were reassigned to do a primary and secondary due to multiple reports of people trapped on the second floor. Searches proved negative and the Squad cleared at 2002 hours.

House Fire in Lewisdale

At 2309 hours, Truck 1 and Engine 12 responded to 2258 Lewisdale Drive with 10 volunteers. Engine 341 arrived on scene with smoke showing. Engine 12 backed up 34's line up to the 2nd floor where the large majority of the fire was located in the walls and rooms. The crew from Truck 1 threw ladders, performed exterior ventilation as well as opened up inside. With a large amount of fire in the walls, there was a significant amount of overhaul to be done to open up all void spaces. The cause of the fire was deemed electrical. Units from 1 cleared shortly before 0100 hours.

RS1 Responds to Good Luck Rd

At 1440 hours, Squad 1 was dispatched on the 2nd alarm to 9759 Goodluck Rd in 48’s first due for a building fire. Upon arrival crews were sent to do a secondary search of both fire building and adjacent exposure. Crews forced multiple doors and performed minor overhaul in exposure building. Squad 1 cleared at 1601 hours.

Lightening Strike Brings Truck 1

At 1810 hours, Truck 1 was dispatched on the task force to 5327 Sheriff Rd in Chapel Oaks for the building fire. Upon arrival Truck 1 and the rest of the task force assignment were assigned the RIT. A few members of Truck on went to side Charlie to make easier access for deployment of the RIT in the event of an emergency activation. Before the fire was finally brought under control, the fire required multiple alarms in addition to units from PG as well as the District of Columbia. Truck 1 cleared at 2126 hours.

Fatal Fire on Kenilworth Ave.

At 1136 hours, Truck 1 responded with 7 personnel to 5122 Kenilworth Ave in Bladensburg’s area for the apartment fire with an infant trapped. The Engine 92 arrived on scene with working fire on the 3rd floor with reports that a baby was trapped near the back bedroom window. Truck 1 split crews with half the crew to the fire floor to start an aggressive primary search while the other half threw 141 feet of ground ladders to side charlie within minutes of arrival.

As the interior crew from Truck 1 made entry into the fire apartment, the crew from 9 located the infant in the back bedroom and passed the baby out a window to a member from Truck 1. Truck 1 completed horizontal ventilation, opened up for 9 and took care of the utilities in the apartment. Despite tremendous efforts of all the units on the fireground the infant was pronounced at the hospital. Truck 1 cleared at 1238 hours.

Apartment Fire in 34's Area

Image At 0001 hours, Truck 1 was dispatched to 7302 Riggs Road for the reported apartment on fire. E341 went on scene with smoke showing. Moments later E341 advised of people trapped on the 2nd floor and directed the first arriving truck to go the 2nd Floor on arrival. Truck 1 with 4 arrived second on scene and went to work.

One Overturned for Squad 1

At 2216 hours, Squad 1 and units from 9 were dispatched to Charles Armentrout and Rhode Island Avenue for the MVA. Units arrived on the scene with a single car overturned with a single patient trapped. The Squad crew stabilized the vehicle using struts and opened up the side of the vehicle for patient removal. The patient was transferred to EMS units on scene where they were transported to PG Trauma. Squad 1 cleared around 2300 hours.

Garage Off on Rittenhouse St.

Image At 0405 hours, the box was put out for the house fire at 2000 block of Rittenhouse St. in Chillum's area. Truck 1 and Engine 11 responded 9 personnel. The engine from 44 was first arriving and advised they had a fully involved detached garage. Truck 1 was the first arriving special service and checked the house for extension as well as ran lights to the scene. Engine 11 provided water supply to 44's engine and assisted crews from 7 as they extinguished the fire. Crews cleared around 0600 hours.
Truck 1 to Berwyn Heights House

At 1202 hours, Truck 1 was alerted for a reported house fire at 5701 Ruatan Street in Company 14's first due. Truck 1 responded as the 2nd due truck with a crew of two. Chief 11 was first to arrive and reported a working fire. Truck 1 was the first arriving truck, which put the crew to work immediately. The driver and tiller man threw several ground ladders, ran lights and fans, and secured the utilities. Truck 1 cleared the scene in less than 2 hours.
HVFD Responds to 44 House Fire

Shortly after 0130 hours, the box was struck for the house on fire with possible people traped at 5427 Sargent Road. Engine 11 and Truck 1 responded with 10 volunteers. Truck 1 was the first arriving truck and forced entry for E441's crew to advance their line. The crew from the truck also performed the primary search which ended up negative, threw ladders, opened up inside checking for extension and the vented the roof. Engine 11's crew picked up 44's line and stretched a backup line from 441 to assist in the extinguishment of the fire. Crews cleared just after 0230 hours.
Engine and Truck to Erie St. Box

At 1955 hours, Engine 11 and Truck 1 were dispatched to 2009 Erie St in Co. 34s first due for smoke coming from the roof. Engine 343 arrived with smoke showing. After further investigation it was determined there was a bedroom off in the one of the basement apartments. Truck 1 arrived as the 2nd due truck. The crews went to work laddering the building, searching the fire apartment and opening up. Engine 11 stretched a back up line and staged in the hallway, due to the size of the apartment. Crews cleared at 2103 hours.

HVFD Pump Training

Over the weekend, over a dozen members of the HVFD attended "Pump Fest", a part of our driver's training program to refresh current and teach future engine drivers engine company operations. The classroom and practical sessions covered pump theory as well as multiple lines, relay pumping, master streams, and tandem pumping. There was also an unexpected scenario on shutting down a broken hydrant, which was enjoyed by all. Special thanks to Gary and Bladensburg VFD for bringing over Engine 92 for us to use in place of our out of service pumper.

At 1223 hours, Squad 1 was specially requested to respond to a building fire at 5232 Kenilworth in 9’s area. Before marking up on the call the second alarm was struck requesting Engine 12 as well. Squad 1 arrived, and went to working opening up the first floor and checking for hotspots. The second alarm units staged off of Kenilworth and were later returned. Crews cleared at 1300 hours.
Engine and Truck to College Park

At 0112 hours, Truck 1 and Engine 12 were dispatched to 4221 Knox Rd for a building fire. While responding crews were notified that there were people possibly trapped, which later proved negative. Engine 121 arrived with fire and smoke showing. Engine 12 arrived and pulled the 400ft line and to the second floor and made quick work of some minor extension. The truck threw ladders, searched and opened up the second and roof for the crews inside. After extensive overhaul, crews cleared at 0256 hours.

At 1511 hours, units were dispatched to 5714 16th Avenue for the apartment fire. Truck 1 responded with 7 and arrived on scene as the first due special service. Truck 1 split crews with the exterior crew throwing over 200' of ground ladders while the interior crew opened up, ventilated and overhauled the fire apartment. Truck 1 cleared at 1644 hours.

Riverdale Heights Fatal Fire

At 0833 hours, Truck 1 was dispatched to 6303 58th Avenue in Riverdale Heights. Units arrived on scene with fire showing. Truck 1 arrived as the 2nd due special service and went to work laddering the house, venting and opening up for the engine crew on division 2. During searches, the crew found a woman who had unfortunately succumbed to her injuries. As a result of the cluttered condition of the house, the crew was on scene until 1500 hours performing extensive overhaul as well as helping with the fire investigation.

At 1710 hours Squad 1 was alerted for 1 trapped in Company 9's area at Tanglewood Dr. and Rt. 1. Upon arrival the squad went to work stabilizing, taking glass, removing both doors and the roof. Squad 1 cleared at 1820 hours. Additional photos with the story.

HVFD Stays Busy with Two More Fires

At 0348 hours, Truck 1 was alerted for a house on fire at 5405 Farragut St in Co. 9's area. Units from Bladensburg arrived reporting a working fire in the basement. Truck 1 assuming second-due responsibilities and conducted a search of the first and second floors, as well as ventilated and threw numerous ground ladders. The crew also assisted with lighting and overhaul in the basement, and cleared about an hour later.

Later that morning the box was sounded for 1512 Timber Ridge Lane in Co. 44's area. With company 44 out of service for training, Engine 12 was first due. Arriving with nothing evident, the crew stretched a line to the third floor to find an apartment banked down with smoke. The small fire was quickly extinguished. The primary search was completed and ventilated prior to a majority of the balance of the box alarm's arrival. Engine 12 returned to service at 1210 after overhaul and investigation.

Spring Hill Lake: Back to Back

At 0011 hours, PSC sounded the box for 9150 Edmonston Road in the Spring Hill Lake section of Berwyn Heights. Units arrived on scene with smoke showing from the third floor of a three story garden style apartment. As the crews started opening up they found heavy fire in all of the void spaces, pipe chases and walls on all three floors. Command then requested a fire task force bringing Truck 1, which had been transferred to Company 14. As Truck 1 arrived on scene the crew was tasked with completing secondary searches of the fire apartment, securing utilities and assisting in opening up and extinguishing the fire. The fire eventually went to a 3rd alarm which also brought Engine 11 to the scene. The units from Company 1 remained on scene until 0230 hours.

At 0930, hours PSC sounded yet another box to the Spring Hill Lake complex, this time at 9118 Edmonston Road. First arriving units found fire in the electrical panel with extension to the floors above. Command quickly requested a second alarm, bringing Truck 1 to the scene. Once again the crew from Truck 1 assisted with opening up the floors directly above the original fire room and assisting with utility control. The units cleared shortly after 1200 hours.

At 1337 hours, the box was sounded for the house fire at 4221 Cottage Terrace in 55's area. Upon arrival, E551 advised fire showing and forced entry to the house. Truck 1 arrived as the first special service on scene behind units from 55 and 9 and immediately went to work. The Truck split crews with one crew opening up in support of the attack crews and the other crew throwing ladders. The crew also conducted the primary search which proved negative. Truck 1 cleared at 1513 hours.

Friday evening, at 2230 hours, the bells sounded for Truck 1 to respond for the box at 54th Avenue and Riverdale Rd for a house fire. Engine 71 went on scene with fire showing from the third floor. Truck 1 arrived as the second due truck and positioned on side C, D of the fire building. The crew went to work opening the vacant building up for the engine companies, while the stick was extended to the 3rd floor to gain access to the upper floor. Along with the officer, the bars man and tiller man opened up the 2nd, 3rd and attic of the dwelling, while the outside team took bars off windows and put up 175ft of ground ladders. Truck 1 cleared at 1250 hours
