At 0741 hours, Engine 11 and Truck 1 were dispatched to the 5000 block of 37th Place for a reported house fire. While responding, units could see a large column of black smoke as Communications updated units of possible people trapped.
While Engine 11 was laying out from the hydrant, Truck 1 arrived with a one-story single family dwelling with heavy fire showing from the rear. Engine 11 stretched the line while the Truck crew started searches, which proved negative. The fire was contained to a few rooms and extension was minimal. Crews from the HVFD remained on scene until about 0930 hours.
An adult male occupant sustained 2nd degree burns and smoke inhalation and was transported by medics to an area Burn Unit. His injuries are considered serious. Fire Investigators determined improperly discarded smoking materials caused the fire in the basement of the home and fire loss is estimated at $40,000. The residents will be displaced and are making their own housing arrangements.
Other companies clearing the 37th Place scene just after 9 a.m. were dispatched to the 2600 Nicholson Street in the Kirkwood complex for a reported apartment fire. Firefighters arrived quickly and saw fire and smoke showing from the second floor.
A simultaneous interior attack on the fire and a search and rescue for trapped occupants was initiated. Firefighters from Truck 34 (Chillum-Adelphi) rescued an adult by way of a ground ladder from a 3rd floor apartment. The fire was knocked in about 20 minutes.
A Fire Lieutenant sustained smoke inhalation injuries when his helmet and his fresh air providing face piece became dislodged while operating inside the building. He was transported by medics to an area Burn Unit where he has been admitted. He is listed in good condition. Five apartments were declared uninhabitable; apartment management will assist those families displaced with other apartments. Fire Investigators determined the cause to be accidental and attributed to a child playing with matches. Fire loss is estimated at $15,000. |
