The 4th of July was filled with fire works and fire calls for Company 1. With no career staff for the holiday, Hyattsville Volunteers manned the station for what turned out to be an exciting day. Company 1 responded on 30 emergency calls from the start of the 4th into early morning the next day.
To start the day, Truck 1 and Engine 11 were requested for the second alarm in 22’s area where units were held in staging then later released. Later on in the morning, Truck 1 responded to a kitchen fire in the College Park area. Truck 1 assisted with ventilation and controlled the sprinkler system; which had knocked the majority of the fire.
The afternoon brought the first 2 of the 6 cuttings in the surrounding areas we'd run for the night. Co. 1 was in for a busy night, with violence and numerous other emergencies including one extrication on University Blvd. A vehicle was T-boned at an intersection resulting in one patient trapped. Squad 1’s crew worked quickly to stabilize the vehicle and cut the passenger door to remove the patient.
Even after midnight, the calls didn't stop as we ran a different type of fireworks. A driver ran into and sheared off a telephone/power pole on Adelphi Rd. and caused quite the light show with the transformers blowing. For those keeping score at home, Power Pole 1, Driver 0.
Last but not least, HVFD would like to thank Hyattsville City Police for joining in our celebratory cookout; which was only interrupted about 12 times. |
