Man Down Call Is Likely Homicide
The HVFD's ambulance was dispatched to the 3300 block of Rosemary Lane in University Hills early Sunday morning, Apr. 30 for a reported man down and found a victim who had been the victim of a gunshot wound, police said. The adult male was pronounced dead on the scene. The incident is under investigation by the Prince George's County Police Department. Crime is rare in the middle class neighborhood and it was the first homicide scene there in recent memory.

Members Take Part In Major Clean Up
In preparation for the upcoming EMERGENCY! Fest, dozens of HVFD members helped out at a major clean up at the station on Saturday, Apr. 29. Much of the interior and exterior of the station was painted and cleaned. The event was followed by a department picnic. Thanks to all the members who assisted.

Man Pulled From Adelphi House Fire
Hyattsville firefighters Dave Meadows and Scott Hudson pulled an unconscious man from a house fire in Adelphi just after midnight on Thursday, Apr. 27. Units reported smoke showing on arrival at the single family home in the 7300 block of 23rd Ave. in Lewisdale [Co.34: Chillum-Adelphi]. A fire in the kitchen had extended into the attic with heavy smoke throughout. An adult man was in critical condition with respiratory burns. He was found in a bedroom on the primary search by the two members of Truck 1's crew. The fire was contained in less than 10 minutes. Rescue Squad 1 and Truck 1 responded with 11 personnel. Chief 1B was the incident commander. Chief 1A had the interior as Battalion Chief 4. Units from Chillum, Branchville and College Park also responded.

Short on Aerials, Truck 1 Responds as Truck 33
With a slew of unavailable ladder trucks in the central portion of the county on Monday night, Apr. 24, HVFD Truck 1 transferred overnight to the Kentland VFD for about 12 hours at the request of Chief 33.

Riverdale Heights Extrication
Early Saturday Morning, Apr. 22, Squad-1 responded to a vehicle accident in the 6300 block of Kenilworth Ave. The squad and other units arrived within minutes, finding a car that had lost control, t-boned and split-in-half a telephone pole, and ended up crashing into parked cars at a bowling alley. The impact on the driver's side tore the steering wheel off. The adult male victim trapped inside was extricated in about 10 minutes and taken as a trauma to Prince George's Trauma Center.

Rash of Blazes Continue
A busy few weeks continued for the HVFD with three more working fires in the last week. On Apr. 3, Engines 11 & 12 responded to a small basement fire in the first due in the 4000 block of Nicholson St. On Apr. 4, Squad-1 was dispatched to Montgomery County's Hillandale section to assist with search and evacuation at a high rise fire. Then, on Apr. 8, Truck 1 responded to a fully involved vacant house converted into a church on Ager Road near West Hyattsville. Later that night, Squad 1 responded to -- but was not utilized -- at a fatal accident in at New Hampshire Ave. and University Blvd. in Adelphi.

Squad Responds to Adelphi House Fire; Three Firefighters Injured Battling Blaze
An early morning intense house fire injured three fire fighters and destroyed an Adelphi House. Just after 2:30 am on April 1, units were dispatched to 2215 Apache Street for a reported house fire and arrived with heavy fire showing from the basement. Squad-1 responded and performed search and rescue as well as general fireground operations.

Montgomery Blaze First of Three
At about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Mar. 21, Squad 1 was dispatched mutual aid to Montgomery County along with other Prince George's County units for a reported apartment fire. Units arrived with heavy fire showing from a third-floor unit in a 12-story high rise on New Hampshire Ave. The squad crew was the first into the fire apartment, entering via Takoma Park's aerial. Crews knocked down the blaze in about 10 minutes. Squad 1's crew performed search and ventilation operations and was on the scene for about two hours. Chief 1 responded as well.

At about 2 a.m, Squad 1 responded to the 4000 block of 34th St., in Mount Rainier arriving with other units with a 20x30 storage building fully involved nearly on the ground. HVFD crews performed overhaul and lighting operations.

At about 4:30 a.m., Truck 1 was dispatched to 4808 Rhode Island Ave. in Brentwood. Units arrived with heavy fire in a one story auto repair shop. The crew performed forcible entry, search and roof ventilation operations.

Units on Southside 3-Alarm Equiv.
MSU-1 was dispatched at a second alarm at the Federal Records Center in Suitland, about a 25-mile response, shortly after 3 p.m., Feb. 29. The 2nd-alarm was sent for smoke removal, breathing air support and overhaul for a fire in a massive records storage area. E-12, initially transferred to Co. 17, later was sent to the scene to assist. Additional units were called throughout the night. HVFD units were back in quarters at about 11:30 p.m. Additional crews staffed the HVFD's station.

Squad 51 Responding to HVFD
