Live-In Program
REQUIREMENTS
If you are at least 16 years old and willing to serve your fellow citizens as a firefighter or emergency medical provider, the Hyattsville Vounteer Fire Department is looking for you. From college students new or moving to the area, to life-long Hyattsville area residents, if you've got the time to dedicate to your community we'd love to have you.
The initial application process includes a background check and typically takes between 4 to 6 weeks. During the wait, new members are encouraged to participate in other department activities. Additionally, preliminary approval for membership is granted within a few weeks and allows a member to begin certain training.
New operational members are required to complete training provided by the Prince George's County Fire Department, Maryland Fire and Rescue and Institute and other training agencies. Training includes Firefighter I and Emegency Medical Technician courses as a minimum to be completed before riding at various positions on emergency units and within 36 months of membership. Non-operational members must also complete the application process and be with the department for at least 6 months to be considered an active member.
Members are required to committ to a duty night, from 7-11 p.m. weekdays, sleep-in at least once a month and also rotate weekend duty. The average new volunteer can be expected to be at the firehouse between 5 and 10 hours each week.
There are many opportunities for advancement and responsibility on both the operational and administrative side of the department.

The HVFD has several membership levels of membership that can fit into almost anyone's desires and skills: firefighting and/or emergency medical, administrative or auxiliary. Whether you want to be on the front lines or help in the background organizing our programs and maintaining the high level of service provided by our department, we've got the opportunity for you. All training and equipment are provided. Come on up!

HOW TO GET STARTED
So now you've decided you want to be a volunteer firefighter or already are and want to join the HVFD. What do you do? Well, if you live locally try stopping by our firehouse at 6200 Belcrest Road at the corner of Belcrest and Queens Chapel Roads in Hyattsville week nights between 7pm and 9pm and ask to speak to a volunteer officer or membership committee volunteer. THE SCOOP ON LIVE-IN MEMBERSHIP
Live-In Membership is offered to students at the University of Maryland at College Park, University of Maryland University College, Montgomery College in Rockville or any area university. Students who are majoring in fire science, fire protection engineering or a related field are always welcome to apply for live-in membership. We've had live-in members from many states besides Maryland, including Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio and Florida. There is a waiting list for live-in membership and preference is given to qualified applicants that hold certification as a Firefighter I and Emergency Medical Technician.
