SQUAD OF THE YEAR
The crew from Rescue Squad 1 on a serious accident in May was awarded the Prince George's County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association's Heavy Duty Rescue Squad of the Year award.

On Memorial Day weekend, four people were trapped in a station wagon that had been rear-ended at high speed and then t-boned. There were torrential rains at the time of the crash.

When units from the
Riverdale station arrived at the scene at Route 1 and East West Highway they found a three-car wreck with the entrapment, immediately requesting Squad 1, an additional BLS ambulance and two paramedic units. Within 25 minutes of their arrival, the crew from Squad 1 had sucessfully extricated all four of the victims -- two in the front seat, one in the rear and a third who was trapped in between. All four doors of the car and the roof had to be removed to complete the extrication.Sadly, the victim in the rear seat later died at the hospital as a result of her injuries.

Police were able to immediately take the driver of the car that caused the accident into custody.

The crew of Squad 1 consisted of: Volunteer Lt. Marshall Davies, Volunteer Sergeants Jeff Werth and Steve Wright; Career Firefighters Horace Stanback and Jonathan Henson.

RANSOM ENDS TERM AS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT, GETS NOD INTO HALL OF FAME
The HVFD's President, Jonathan Ransom, completed three years of service to the Prince George's County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association this weekend following the annual convention in
Laurel

Ransom served as President last year after two years as 1st and 2nd vice president respectively. Ransom has been the President of the HVFD for more than 13 years and continues to serve in that position

In a suprise to him (but not the membership), Ransom was elected into the prestigious Prince George's County VF&RA's Hall of Fame, just of 10 members of the county's volunteer fire service who are inducted each year. Text from his nomination will be posted online soon

On the second night of the convention, Ransom recognized the members of his department by presenting them with his President's award. On giving the award, Ransom thanked the members of the department, especially Chief Moltrup and Vice President Moran, for helping him manage the department and keep things going while he also was responsible for managing the county's volunteer fire service.

Ransom was the first African-American to serve as President of the Association. The new president, Judy Lau, is also a groundbreaker as the first woman to serve as President.

COMPANY ONE GETS ATTENTION IN PARADE
The Hyattsville VFD received the "Second Best Appearing Single House Company" award at this year's annual PGCVF&RA parade in Laurel. All of the department's apparatus participated in this event. Units from Mount Rainer stood bye at our own station to ensure that the community of Hyattsville was well served with fire/rescue service. Congratulations to the Branchville VFD...this year's Best Appearing Company.
