Just before 4pm, units from the PGFD responded to a reported building fire at the City of Bowie Public Works facility at 16500 Annapolis Road in Bowie. Firefighters arrived and reported a large building heavily involved in fire., immediately calling for a second alarm. The first chief officers and firefighters found several garbage refuse trucks fully involved in a semi-enclosed wooden structure. They were able to pull three of the vehicles away as they began to catch fire, but six were lost to the fire. The fire took about 45 minutes to bring under control. About 45 firefighters from Bowie, Arundel (AA County), Waugh Chapel (AA County), Glenn Dale, Kentland, Marlboro, Landover Hills, Hyattsville, Berwyn Heights, Bladensburg (ECU-9) and West Lanham Hills responded. The vehicles were initially estimated at losses of $500,000+, several were newly purchased and it was anticipated that it would be six months before they could be replaced. The fire may have been caused by a malfunctioning engine.
