Complete Site Index | Site Search Engine

The Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. World Wide Web site was created in April 1996 as part of a project to put our community newspaper online. From there it expanded over time to be what it is today -- one of the most extensive and most popular sites for any individual fire department in the world with hundreds of pages of information, pictures, links and more.

HVFD Online and the pages within have been visited by tens of thousands of firefighters, EMTs, fire service enthusiasts and others on the web, currently averaging nearly 400 individual visitors to all of our pages each day. We link to and are linked from many sites and search engines around the world. The site was recently noted as a "Firehouse Magzaine Hot Spot on the Web."

The site was originially located on the Workstations at Maryland (WAM) server on a personal account at the University of Maryland at College Park. In September 1996 the site was moved to its own domain "www.hyattsvillevfd.org" on Erol's Internet's server based in Springfield, Virginia.

The site is designed and maintained by HVFD Fire Marshal Dave J. Iannone, owner of CoolWriter Publications, a design and publishing company based in College Park, Maryland

HVFD Online is maintained utilizing several computers at the office of CoolWriter Publications and at the Hyattsville VFD fire station. Mainly, it is developed using a Power Macintosh 8500/150 - Power PC; Hewlett Packard ScanJet 4P for photos; RasterOps SuperScan Mc21 - 21" screen; Adobe Photoshop 4.0 with PhotoTools.

All pictures are scanned at 72dpi with a few exceptions to maximize memory space while at the same time being easily viewed.

The site is updated several times a week. The majority of pages are currently created by hand, without the use of a web design program.

We utilize CGI scripting on our forms, search engines, restricted/regulated access area, random links and more. We also have animated and custom graphics and a limited amount of JAVA in an attempt to make the page as accessible as possible to all internet users.

HVFD Online currently utilizes about 25MB of web space with expected expansion to 40MB of space available by the end of 1998.

Several sites are contained within the HVFD Web Site. Including: The Emergency! Fan Page (for the hit 70's TV Show about LA County Paramedics), The DC Metro Fire/Rescue Wire (updated daily with incidents of note) and the new Fire/Rescue WWW Link Directory (thousands of related links broken down into categories).

Photos and other information come from a wide variety of sources as noted on individual pages. Almost 50 of our members have e-mail with more being added each week. All members of the HVFD have internet access at the firehouse. We utilize the home page and e-mail to keep our members and the rest of the world informed about what we do, how we do it, what is in store for our future and what we've accomplished in the past.
