Member of the Year
Luke Alar
Volunteer Fire Captain / Board of Director
Luke Alar always had a calling to be a firefighter since he was a youngster
in Shavertown, Pa. He started paricipating actively in the fire service in
his early teens at the Shavertown Volunteer Fire Company. He received his
fire science degree at Luzerne Community College in Pennsylvania. When he
graduated, he wanted to further pursue his education and moved to College
Park, majoring in Fire Science and Industrial Safety. Luke transferred from
College Park to Hyattsville in 1992 and has quickly risen through the ranks
to Captain. He often acts ss an Assistant Chief and routinely handles
Battalion Duty. Luke also serves on the department's Board of Directors and
is the station training officer. As the senior line officer in the
department, Luke continues to serve as an example to the entire membership.
He is an effective leader with excellent operational and administrative
skills.
Chief's Award
Marshall Davies
Volunteer Fire Lieutenant
Marshall joined the Department in 1992 and has risen to the rank of Lieutenant. Chief Moltrup commended Marshall for his hard work and effort over the last year in completing assignments and for being there whenever his department needed him. Marshall, a nationally-certified Fire Officer 1, is a resident of the first due who joined the department when he was 16 years old. He works part-time in the safety office at Catholic University of America in Washington and also attends Montgomery College in Rockville. Marshall works hard to excell in his image as a role model and leader for the rest of the membership. He was instrumental in getting our new ladder truck designed and placed in service.

Firefighter of the Year
Scotty Southall
Volunteer Firefighter/EMT & Live-In
Scotty joined the department in 1994 and became a live-in member in 1995. In
his home town of Chesterfield, Virginia, he volunteer since 1992. He is a
fire science major at Montgomery College in Rockville. In the last year,
Scottty has been turned over to drive all department apparatus, with the
exeption of the truck tractor -- which he is close to accomplishing now. He
is a nationally-certified Firefighter III. Scotty, an excellent firefighter
as well as leader among the live-in membership, was also the top responder
last year. He hopes to get hired in a career department as a firefighter and
will travel to Seattle in June to take their test. This summer, Scotty has
an internship with the Chesterfield County Fire Department's arson
investigation unit and is also high on the list to be hired in Henrico
County, Va.
EMS Member of the Year
Curt Bergstrom
Volunteer EMT and Probationary Firefighter
Curt Bergstrom joined the department in the Summer of 1996 after finding us
through the Internet. Already a nationally-registered EMT, Curt was the top
non-live-in EMS member last year. He also completed Volunteer Recruit School
and was turned over to ride non-mask on the engine company and is in the
process of getting turned over to ride non-mask on the truck company. He is
always willing to particpate in any department activity and is very
enthusiastic to ride both the ambulance and fire apparatus alike. Curt is a Master's Candidate in Health Care Administration at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
Most Improved Member
Dave Hang
Dave is a sophomore Fire Protection Engineering major at the University of Maryland.
He has been in the fire service since 1992 in Chesterfield County, Virginia
and moved to Hyattsville in 1996. He is a nationally-certified level
Firefighter III. In the last year, he has set an excellent example in the
bunkroom. He has also been cleared to drive the ambulance and is just
starting to drive the engine company.
