Squad Arrives with Fire Showing on Langley Park Two-Alarmer
At about 1830 hours on Thursday, Engine Company 11 (Branchville) was dispatched for a reported outside fire in the 8100 block of 15th Avenue in Langley Park (Co. 34’s area), shortly thereafter upgraded to a full box alarm with multiple 911 calls for an apartment fire with several different addresses reported.
Rescue Squad 1, returning from Washington Adventist Hospital, arrived with smoke showing and positioned on Side Charlie after determining the fire building, soon reporting significant fire conditions from three windows of an apartment on the terrace level extending up to the floors above.
After cutting through a chain link fence that ran the length of the complex row, the squad crew made entry into an adjacent apartment to conduct a primary search and then into the stairwell. The crew split up and conducted primary searches of the other floors with negative results. The crew also controlled access to the fire apartment, which was fully involved, until hoselines were in place. Truck 12, College Park, was also operating inside as initial hoselines were advanced.
Engine Co. 11’s line was stretched to the fire apartment and an attack was made. A primary search of the fire apartment was completed yielding negative results and crews began to open up and assist extinguish the fire in the original apartment.
Numerous companies from Prince George’s and Montgomery counties operated, with lines on all floors, multiple ground and aerial ladders deployed, searches conducted and checked for extension. A second alarm was requested soon after Chief 12 arrived to take command.
The Squad remained on the scene after the fire was under control to assist investigators.
